Assignment #2: Logo

For this project, I arranged a series of organically drawn dominos in an asymmetrical manner, or asymmetrical balance. I decided to use brightly colored dominos to offer a contrast between the bold dominos and the black background, making them stand out. Also, there is a repetition of not only in the carlessly stacked dominos, but also the colors used. This composition can be used in a variety of ways: on a t-shirt, a cd cover, or a large poster.

Project 1: Color + Composition

Create a 5" x 7" composition exploring design elements (points, lines, forms, space, textures, and patterns). Enlarge the image 200-400% and recrop, paying special attention to composition. Generate 3 more layouts using the same image with monochromatic color in reverse, analogous color harmony, and complimentary color harmony.

Color Project

For this project we created a composition and then rendered it out in black and white, reverse monochromatic, analogous colors, and complementary colors. I chose to do a vector drawing.

It works as a NSFW desktop, too!

Exercise 3

Exercise: Forms, Shapes & Space
Elliptical Geometric Shapes
Black on white background
White on black background

Project Two: Logo

For this project, I combined the Starbucks and Obey logos to create a hybrid design. Using scale, radiation and pattern, I tried to give an appearance of the Starbucks logos simultaneously heading within and out from the Obey logo. The red was adapted from the original Obey color, which contrasts well with the eye-catching yellow background that is known to create a sense of hunger. The green of the Starbuck's logos is an approximation of the most common color associated with the brand

Exercise 2: LINE

The four line examples here represent a design of curved thin ink lines (upper left), thin straight ink lines (upper right), thick straight pencil lines (lower left) and organic contour ink lines (lower right). All the lines had to touch at lest two sides of the paper; for the peacock, the solution was to have all the lines connecting to each other so they eventually touched two sides. It is amazing what can actually be done with such strict specifications. This exercise was a great visual challenge.

Texture

For the texture book project I chose to go with the theme of "shades of blue." I the cover I introduced this blue theme, but also contrasted it with the beige flower sketch which I used again on the back of the book. The pages of the book featured different textures I created during class using ink, fabrics, paper, lace, pipe cleaners, plastic wrap, and cardboard. I really enjoyed this project because it allowed us to be a little more crafty and I like incorporating things with tactile qualities into my design.

Sketches

For the color theory project, we began by creating ten sketches. This initial phase of the project was pretty  intimidating for me at first because I don't have a vast array of drawing skills, so I instead decided to make collages. The two I posted here were some of my favorites. Eventually I decided to use the sunglasses one in my final project which I will post later. Overall I thought this project was sort of a turning point in the class for me because I began to feel more confident in my voice as a designer.

Pattern

st

These patterns were originally geometric and organic shapes that I painted. After resizing, copying, and repeating them, they formed the patterns above. This project was a bit of struggle for me because of all the gluing involved, which got a bit messy, but eventually I think they turned out pretty well.

Line Project

For the line project I used several different mediums to create these line layouts including markers, pens, magazine clips, aluminum foil, and even dirt. I tried to mix bright colors with more subtle ones, and I also played up my aesthetic voice by creating texture and contrast.

Exercise Three- Forms

The assignment was to paint swatches of black, white, and grey with gouache on layout paper and from these flat neutral hues create forms that would depict two dimensional compositions. This image I created for the assignment is an organic black shape on a white background. Because organic forms are normally thought to have occurred in nature, for this particular shape I chose to depict a human being.

Project Two- Icon or Logo with Design Principles

For this project, I employed radiation to put the center of interest on the horse and also manipulated scale to place a strong emphasis on the subject matter. I decided to utilize complementary colors to create visual harmony as well as offer a contrast between the dominant form of the image and the background that lies behind it. The final composition may be used in print advertising, signs, and overall simply as a logo for a company or as a small design for stationary. With the addition of small numeral text in one of the corners, I can even imagine the design used as a stamp!

KRYLON DESIGN

This Project shows the elements of balance (symetrical) over a middle line.  It's also very radial, with the cans rotating in a circle.  There is a high element of contrast in this design.

Color Assignment

Our assignment was to take a black and white image, crop and enlarge it, pick a color, and then recreate the image 3 times using that same color. Our final image was to include a black and white version of the picture, a reverse monochromatic, an analogous color harmony, and a complimentary color harmony. For my image, I used a face, cropped only to the open lips in a profile view. I chose a light blue as my original color. The analogous color harmony uses various shades of purples and blues. The complimentary color harmony uses orange and blue. The burnt orange, while slightly dulled, was complimentary color according to photoshop.

Logo Assignment

For my logo assignment, I used a lemon wedge to be my principle design. After composing 10 possible compositions in which to use my logo, I narrowed it down to three layouts: scale, repetition, and radiation. The first was a "smiley face" made from the lemons, the second was a pattern of many small lemon wedges, and the third was the wedges revolved in a circular formation. In the end, I chose the second choice, repetition.

I first drew out a colored pencil version of an orange. Then, after scanning the image, I changed the colors in Photoshop to make copies that looked like a lemon and a lime. After scanning and changing the colors, I began to rearrange the lemons, limes, and oranges into a pattern. I think the result was successful, and I could easily see the design used on textiles, especially as a shower curtain! I could also see the pattern on bags, t-shirts, CD covers, or posters. On first glance, I think the fruit looks a lot like candy, so that could work for an advertising campaign for a company like Lifesavers.

Design Project #2 - Iconography and Design Elements

Recently, I've been pretty obsessed with wolves. So for this design project, I chose the image of a wolf composed of brush strokes for my icon:

I then chose to focus on the three design elements of rhythm, radiation, and scale:

The layout that used repetition in order to form a pattern ended up being the most effective. The applications we came up with included decorative elements that utilize pattern, i.e. wallpaper, wrapping paper, an mp3 player skin, etc. Here is an example of the wallpaper application:

Texture Project

Texture

Assignment - To create texture by fooling the eye into believing a two dimensional object has the same tactile feeling as the image it represents.
At first I tried to create the project using only actual materials and relief prints. However, I soon realized that the copy machine made it possible for me to combine actual textures with relief prints while creating a two dimensional product. The copy machine worked great and allowed me to play abound with depth as well.

Exercise 4- Texture and Pattern

Assignment- Create a book of layouts representing texture by rubbing, collaging and relief printing.

I decided to use a mixture of photocopies and relief images for my project. The cover is photocopied cardboard and the pages are unbleached butcher paper.

Exercise Three- Forms

Step-1 On a 5" x 7" layout generate an organic form using white on a black background.

Step 2- Using the organic form, trim the layout into a pie shape then replicate it into a circle.
